This is a project made in collaboration with Scullion Architects about the transformation of ideas into built form. It’s also about duration, an opportunity for slow looking and thinking about what it is to imagine and construct space.

What has emerged is a series of images which reflects on the violence, ingenuity, negotiation, time and care that goes into the process of building. It charts the surfaces of the house, and how during renovation and construction, these surfaces -of structure, services and ornamentation- are gradually reconfigured and refined to produce the new surfaces of a home. During the project I saw the construction site as a space of creativity and solution; a space still formed by hand with all the human frailties and resourcefulness that that infers. Through this process I discovered an often unexpected beauty in the puzzle of spaces as they were revealed and concealed through the building process.

The surfaces of a home are particular in architecture, as they become intimate to their inhabitants, their dimensions, materiality, and even temperature and smell become familiar through touch and use. The process of renovation translates the inherited surfaces of the house into a new series of spaces and surfaces. This book is a document of this translation, a testimony of the work and the imagination that went into building this home, and of creating new surfaces, upon which the lives of its future inhabitants will be drawn.
